Maximizing the savings for utility customers using behind the meter energy storage

Abstract: The transformation of today’s grid toward smart grid has given the energy storage systems (ESSs) the opportunity to provide more services to the electric grid as well as the end customers. On the grid’s side, ESSs can generate revenue streams participating in electricity markets by providing services such as energy arbitrage, frequency regulation or spinning reserves. On the customers’ side, ESSs can provide a wide range of applications from on-site back-up power, storage for off-grid renewable systems to solutions for load shifting and peak shaving for commercial/industrial businesses. This presentation provides an overview of US Utilities’ tariff structures and the use of behind-the-meter energy storage in minimizing the customers’ electricity bills. Case studies are conducted for PG&E’s residential and commercial customers in San Francisco.  

Tu A. Nguyen is a Senior Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories. He is also a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and an editor of IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy. He received his B.S degree in Power Systems from Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Vietnam in 2007 and his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology in 2014. Before joining Sandia National Laboratories in September 2016, he worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at University of Washington. His research interests include energy storage analytics, microgrid modeling and analysis, and the integration of distributed resources into power grids.
